Homeschool Organization – Keeping it Together

One of the most frustrating things is losing a small piece to a puzzle, game, or activity. With little kids, this happens quite often in our house! No matter how hard I try, there always seems to be a mess and my organization is out the window! Hopefully the tips below will help you a bit as it has helped me.

My first tip was a hard one for me to grasp: lower your expectations! Life won’t be like this forever. Kids grow up. Situations change. It is not practical to assume that everything will stay organized how you would like it.

The homeschool organization tip is to raid the dollar store. The amount of baskets, bins, drawers, drawer organizers, etc. they have is fantastic! Use them to your advantage. Have a bin or basket for every child, and, depending on age, per subject or subject group. I personally use a basket for each child and place them on a bookshelf. My kids are only 4 and 2, so I am sure this will change as they get older and work on more subjects.

We also use a small drawer cart for school supplies such as pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, etc.

Is it messy? Yep! But it keeps things together and that’s all that matters right now. There is no reason for me to try to keep it neat when a 4 year old is putting it away each day. He has expectations he has to meet, and those will increase as he gets older. For now, he does what needs to get done and we are pleased with that.

Another thing I find handy are Ziplock bags. This can help keep an activity contained all together. When we are finished with it, all of the pieces go back in the bag. At least it is all together!

While these tips may not be ground breaking or radical, I hope they remind you that things can be simple. You don’t need complex systems to keep your homeschool running smoothly. I will share the links to what we used below.
