About the Template
Writing an essay is not an easy task, especially for a middle schooler who is just learning. I’ve had many students cringe at the word “essay” and those who get extremely anxious. Essays don’t have to be difficult. As a teacher, I’ve looked for simple templates for my students and seemed to come up lacking. Below you will find the template I created with the anxious student in mind.
Students can work through the template just filling in the blanks. When they are done, they simply need to copy out their sentences into a good copy, of course formatting paragraphs correctly. I found my students thrived with this simplistic approach. All of a sudden, essays weren’t overwhelming! Now, the other struggle they had was coming up with a topic, but that’s for another day.
School can be fun and doesn’t need to be anxiety-inducing or overwhelming. An anxious or worried student isn’t learning. They’re worrying. School should be associated with fun and challenges – not stress. I desire for my students and children to want to learn and to love learning.
That’s why I’ve created templates like this. Let’s make learning simple again. Kids are kids and we need to let them be kids. They shouldn’t be stressing over the complications of an essay. Teach them the basics and how to format them correctly, practice, and move on (and come back to practice regularly too!).
Practice.
Just because something is simple, doesn’t mean that it can’t be useful for much. Use this template and guide to have your child write multiple essays. Practice, practice, practice! With the underwhelming layout, your child should be more willing to complete it than if they were staring at a blank sheet of paper.
Spread out assignments over the course of the school year. I find it is better to have students write one essay per month than to have them write four essays in the same month. The first time teaches them, and the other times reinforce the idea. Children can be quick to forget or “forget” concepts learned. I prefer the spiral method that keeps coming back to the learned concepts to reinforce and review.
Use this guide how you wish. You know your child best and what will help them succeed!
